Title: Synthesis and Application of Azo Dyes in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide. Author: Punrattanasin, Nattaya. Advisors: Dr. C. Brent Smith. with diazonium salts to yield intensely colored azo dyes of various shades, pre- These were the only applications of the azo-coupling reaction in the biologic. This paper describes the synthesis and application of azo disperse dye compounds derived from 2-amino-1,3,4- thiadiazolethiol on polyester fibre. And from fastness evaluations, the heterocyclic couplers produced dyes which gave brighter hues on polyester fabric and also gave multiplet absorption bands.

Grant, Committee Member Dr. This dissertation is concerned with the utilization of supercritical carbon dioxide SC-CO2 for the synthesis of azo dyes and their application to textile substrates.

One of the major benefits to diazotization and coupling in SC-CO2 and small amounts of water includes elimination of mineral acid as a proton source for the diazotization application of azo dyes, thereby negating the requirement of neutralization and effluent treatment of highly colored and electrolyte-concentrated effluent.

The work was divided into five main parts.

In the first part, ten common arylamines were selected to study the effect of type and placement of substituents on the product yield of a series of application of azo dyes azo dyes using a SC-CO2-water medium to act as both solvent and proton source.

Azo dyes from arylamines containing nitro- and vinylsulfonyl- substituents in the para-position relative to the diazotizable amino group were easily synthesized in SC-CO2 in reasonable yield.

The synthesis of azo dyes in SC-CO2 was dependent on a combination of basicity, solubility and steric hindrance around the amino group to be diazotized.

The anionic character of most dyes arises from the presence sulfonic acid groups, application of azo dyes are fully ionized at the pH of the dyed article: The anionic dye adheres to these articles through electrostatic forces.

Cationic azo dyes typically contain quaternary ammonium centers. Preparation[ edit ] Most azo dyes are prepared by azo couplingwhich entails an electrophilic substitution reaction of an aryl diazonium cation with another compound, the coupling partner.

Classically coupling partners are other aromatic compounds with electron-donating groups: Typical aniline partners are shown below.

There is a risk of exposure when wearing garments or accessories that contain azo application of azo dyes, or when sleeping in such bedclothes.

Some of the arylamines are also judged capable of producing allergy on skin contact, irritating the eyes, being toxic by inhalation and if swallowed or being very toxic by inhalation, skin contact and if swallowed.

Some of the arylamines have application of azo dyes been judged to be toxic or very toxic to aquatic organisms and to be capable of causing long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment, here you can search in the classification list.
